Volt’s Wine

As the hype toward Volt’s opening (which I have to admit I am buying into) reaches a crescendo I saw a brief blurb today that Volt has selected Aaron Schifferle as their sommelier.  According to that Mr. Schifferle was most recently sommelier and cellar master at the Inn at Little Washington.  Impressive credentials.  I look [...]

Luke’s Is Gone

Front page article in the FNP about the demise of both locations of Luke’s Pizza.  Unfortunately I expect to see more of this before it gets better.

Wine Movie: Bottle Shock

There is a new movie  out with a wine focus.  Its called Bottle Shock.  It is the story of the early days of California wine making featuring the now infamous, blind Paris wine tasting of 1976.  It is based (very loosely by the appearance of the trailer) on George Taber’s book The Judgment of Paris.  (This [...]

Riondo Prosecco Tasting

As mentioned previously Frederick Wine Househas regular free tastings.  In their weekly email I just noticed that one of the wines they are pouring on Saturday June 21st is Riondo Prosecco.  We’ve had this many times before and is consistently one of our favorites for taste and value.  Its frizzante, which means that it is less bubbly [...]

More on Vendors

Rochelle, who writes an excellent blog Lots of Everything wrote a great comment to my last post.  Since not everybody takes time to read the comments I thought I would post my response here.
Rochelle,
Thank you for taking the time to write your comments. I agree totally with what you said.  I would like to mention [...]

Brunswick Farmer’s Market and Reflections on Vendors

Stopped by the Brunswick farmer’s market briefly on Sunday.  Seemed like a light crowd.  Had a different meat purveyor from Boonsboro, but their bacon etc. all had nitrates in it.  Also their beef was grain finished.  I was really in the mood to cook something up, but there was not a whole lot of produce.  [...]

The Euro Effect

Was in the Spirit Shop today and noticed thatone of my favorites: Zardetto Prosecco was up to $13.99 a bottle.  Wow.  Its still at ten bucks in my head.

Screw The Rules

Chardonnay with fish, pinot noir with turkey, cabernet sauvignon with steak.  We’ve all seen the lists of rules for pairing food with wine.  If you want to waste your time you can find whole books devoted to this subject.  This idea that certain wines must be drunk only with certain foods is ridiculous and is [...]

Trapiche Malbec Mendoza 2006

Argentinian Malbec has long been a go-to category when looking for values.  Fortunately this remains so because unlike the Dollar’s problems with the Euro, South American exchange rates have not changed dramatically.   So with that in mind I sampled a bottle of 2006 Trapiche Mabec Mendoza. (approx $8 from Ye Old Spirit Shoppe) Made from 100% malbec [...]

Cook Through Blogging

I recently came across an article in the Wall Street Journal about an amazing phenomenon that I was unaware of.  Its called cook through blogging, where a writer selects a cookbook and then works his way through every recipe in the book writing about their experiences.   People are doing all sorts of books including the French Laundry Cookbook, [...]
